Around Great Britain in 30 Days: Day 21, Wandering Liverpool

A rainy day exploring the great British city of Liverpool.

Liverpool is famous for the Beatles, industry, and shipbuilding. I actually quite enjoyed it considering spending most of the day there was not in my original plans.

Day 21 was a day of changes and crappy weather. I woke up late (but ended up having a fantastic breakfast at the Guest House I was staying in). The weather was bad. It had been dumping rain since the day before, after an already wet couple of weeks. There was flooding. So, my plans to check out England’s famous Lake District didn’t really work out according to plan. I was already planning to go to Liverpool, but it ended up having a bit more time there as planned due to the weather.

The route I tried to take on Day 21 of my 30-day adventure around Great Britain.

Stop 1: the Lake District

Basically, the only views I had in the Lake District. Still pretty though.

I made it a little way along a scenic road, until it was flooded out. I figured it would be best just to continue onto Liverpool.

Stop 2: Liverpool

After arriving (bit of a drive from the Lake District) and checking into my hostel (which had parking!), I set out for some wandering. I didn’t plan for much in Liverpool, so I kind of winged it as I went. Since the weather was pretty raining, I decided to spend some time at the World Museum, a fantastic museum with natural history and cultural exhibits.

The World Museum, all impressive.

I don’t want to bore you with all the cool things I found at the museum, but I had to include this Moai statue from Easter Island. So cool!

From the World Museum, I headed down to the Liverpool Cathedral.

The Liverpool Lime Street Station. That is one impressive train station. They just don’t make them like they used to unfortunately.

St. Luke’s Bombed Out Church, is an early 19th century church that was left roofless during the Liverpool Blitz in 1941. It has remained so since then.

Cool gate at China Town.

I wandered my way to the Liverpool Cathedral. It’s the largest cathedral and religious building in Britain. Construction begun in 1904 and finally came to a close in 1978. It’s a staggering 207 yards (189 m) long and 331 ft (101 m) tall, also one of the world’s tallest. The final design turned out a bit more subdued than the original. It’s probably a good thing.

The gigantic Liverpool Cathedral.

I’m not sure what I think about that statue above the door. Kinda weird.

It was insanely dark in the church. The rain did not help at all. Very few of my photos turned out (the camera I used was bought in 2008). So, this is the altar, one of the very few areas of the church that were lit up. I’m still surprised I didn’t trip over myself in that church, it was that dark.

The altar’s style harkens back to the intricate altars of medieval churches.

After Liverpool Cathedral, I made my way to the docks. This entire area has been rehabbed since the shipping industry went bust.

The docks, old warehouses and canal boats. The area around Liverpool is full of canals because it used to be easier shipping goods over water than over bumpy, pot holed roads.

A normal Liverpool view.

Yellow submarine in Liverpool. Who would have guessed?

All these old office buildings and warehouses by the docks have been transformed into expensive housing and new businesses.

Giant anchor in front of the Maritime Museum. Liverpool has a bunch of museums that I didn’t get to check out, many right here at the docks.

I found this area of the docks super cool.

Buildings surround the Royal Albert Dock. Now full of expensive apartments and expensive stores and expensive food. Still cool though.

Last but not least, nearby the docks is this awesome building, the Royal Liver Building. What a name.

It was a day that didn’t turn out as plan, but I still had a great time. I still want to go back and see the museums that I passed along the way. Liverpool is often neglected by tourists (other than Beatles fans) but there is lots to see and do here. There is something for everyone.

Check out Day 22, where I check out an adorable town and then head into Wales to see some awesome castles!
