Some more places I found along my journey around Spain.
The problem of visiting so many places in Spain in five weeks is how to blog about it. Even between the cities I visited, I stopped in between. How do I fit all these places in? Well, here, I guess.
The following places were places I stopped quickly at along the way on my road trip.
Starting with the Royal Palace of La Granja of San Ildefonso, my first royal palace. It’s a small but gorgeous 17th century palace near Segovia.
Jana Irving A giant royal palace, of course, needs a giant chapel.
Jana Irving There is a giant garden at the rear of the palace. The palace charges a fee; however, the garden is free.
Moving on to the little town of Simancas, which I visited after Valladolid.
Jana Irving The Castle of Simancas.
Jana Irving Views of the old Bridge of Simancas and the Rio Pisuerga.
Jana Irving There is a handful of old buildings in the town.
After Simancas, I stopped in Tordesillas.
Jana Irving Tordesillas’ super yellow Plaza Mayor.
Jana Irving San Antolín de Tordesillas.
I continued to Medina del Campo, where you can wander around the ground floor of its castle, Castillo de la Mota, for free.
Jana Irving It was awesomely foggy.
Jana Irving The area between the walls.
Jana Irving And it’s a courtyard.
Quick stop in Arevalo.
Jana Irving Where I saw the Castle of Arevalo. Still foggy.
After visiting Ávila, I made a quick stop to see the Castle of Narros de Saldueña. It was in a town you wouldn’t expect a castle in.
Jana Irving It’s a bit interesting looking.
After leaving Salamanca, I made a stop at gorgeous Salvatierra de Tormes.
Jana Irving It overlooks the Reservoir of Santa Teresa.
Jana Irving There’s only 78 people left in this town but it’s still cute.
Jana Irving There are ruins right in the middle of town.
Jana Irving Very cute.
Jana Irving The ruined Castillo de la Mora.
While in Cordoba, I went outside of the city to visit the Castillo Almodovar del Rio, a privately owned castle that was used for filming Game of Thrones.
Jana Irving It’s very much a castle. Previously there was an Ancient Roman fort on this hill, which the Moors built over. Later Christians and restorers are responsible for its appearance today.
Jana Irving Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much, but it is an interesting castle.
Jana Irving The courtyard.
Jana Irving The main tower.
Jana Irving An entrance used in Game of Thrones. This castle filled in for Highgarden.
Jana Irving That balcony was also used for filming.
Jana Irving The castle from above.
After I left Cordoba, I made my way to the ruins of the Medina Azahara. It was a 10th century fortified Moorish city-palace. Unfortunately, not all the site was open, so it was a short visit.
Jana Irving You are more roped in here than Pompeii, which was sad.
Jana Irving The palace was terraced up a hill.
Jana Irving The Upper Basilica building, which housed government offices.
Jana Irving It would have been a cool looking building.
Jana Irving That basilica building again.
Jana Irving Still has a sidewalk!
Jana Irving Some of the walls are still pretty high.
Jana Irving Cool arches. This palace must have been gorgeous.
Jana Irving Very cool!
Next stop was the town of Andujar.
Jana Irving Cute!
Jana Irving There are several old buildings that can be found here.
Jana Irving It’s a cute town.
