Explorations of a gorgeous city on the Adriatic Sea.
Monopoli is a lovely city in Southern Italy. The old city sits on a peninsula that juts out in the Adriatic Sea. The old city is very compact, but it’s adorable.
I didn’t plan to go to Monopoli on this trip. I just ended up with a bit more time than expected after exploring Ostuni. So, I picked a city on the same rail line on the way back to Bari. Why did I pick this city over other ones? It was the name. I spent the short train journey to plan my visit.

Found a cute piazza on the way to the old city.

The Largo Fontanelle.

Heading into the old city.

San Domenico.

A gorgeous rose window on that church.

A tiny street.

Monopoli has some cute streets.

Very cute.

Monopoli has several harbors.

Faro Rosso Monopoli, at the entrance of the harbor.

A little castle to protect the port.

The old port.

So very cute.

Door to the Castello Carlo V.

Love that the castle is right on the water.

The sea was a bit angry that day.

On the Lungomare Santa Maria.

Neat church that I can’t find the name of.

Cappella San Vito Martire on the right.

Old city walls.

Love that bell tower.

Cattedrale Maria Santissima della Madia.

I’m not sure what is up with that wall but I love it.
Monopoli’s old city is tiny, which made it perfect for an afternoon wander. The city is easily reachable from Bari by train. I’m very glad I stopped.
