Explorations of a small German town and its famous castle.
Cochem, Germany, lies in a river valley surrounded by steep hills. It’s downriver from the more well known city of Trier. It’s main attraction is its castle and that’s why I visited. Obviously.
I took a quick stroll through town straight toward the castle. It was a Saturday morning and the weather was nice, and I figured the castle would be busy. I wasn’t wrong.
Jana Irving Reichsburg Cochem (Cochem Castle) is perched on top of a steep hill overlooking the river.
Jana Irving It’s kind of imposing.

Jana Irving The super tall central tower.
Jana Irving I joined a tour as it was the only way to see the interior. My issue was that there were too many people per tour. We all barely fit in this room. I only got the pictures I did because I stayed at the back of the group.
Jana Irving The castle was set on fire in the 17th century and reconstructed in the 19th century. Therefore, the decorations are Neo-Gothic. Many castles were rebuilt or redecorated during the same period throughout Europe.
Jana Irving I love the decor.
Jana Irving The Great Hall.
Jana Irving A sitting area in the Great Hall. I love the furniture.
Jana Irving The castle has wonderful views.
Jana Irving Such a cool castle.

Jana Irving So very cute.
Jana Irving Cochem is a lovely little town.
Cochem was fun to explore. Other than too many people on the castle tour, my visit went relatively well. However, if you plan to come, bring some cash. No restaurant takes cards. Unfortunately common in Germany.
Check out my next update where I explore a small town with a waterfall right in the middle!
