Explorations of a vivid landscape created by erosion.
Providence Canyon State Park is southwest Georgia, not far from the border with Alabama. Nicknamed Georgia’s “Little Grand Canyon,” Providence Canyon was created by the same process as its much larger cousin, erosion. However, it wasn’t a river that dug this canyon out over millions of years, but erosion from farming. Providence Canyon was a natural feature before European and American settlers came to the area. It was their bad farming practices that seriously increased the gullies. Water runoff from fields, with no vegetation to hold the sandy soil together, equals lots and lots of erosion.
Jana Irving I went straight to the bottom of the canyon. You can really tell it just stormed.
Jana Irving The bottom of the canyon is highly vegetated, but once you head into the smaller side canyons, you start to see the cliff.
Jana Irving Created by erosion.
Jana Irving Many smaller gullies flow down from the cliff tops. Most of these are unstable and you are told to stay out.
Jana Irving Continuing along the creek trail.
Jana Irving The colors remind me of Bryce Canyon in Utah.
Jana Irving Some of those trees are barely hanging on.
Jana Irving This area was pretty cool.
Jana Irving Definitely giving me out west vibes.
Jana Irving Now this reminds me of Capitol Reef.
Jana Irving Created by bad agricultural processes but still gorgeous.
Jana Irving Love this.
Jana Irving All the side canyons are super fun to explore.
Jana Irving This was not an experience I thought I would get in Georgia.
Jana Irving You can really see the active erosion here.
Jana Irving The trail creates a loop across the top of the canyon. Here are a bunch of abandoned vehicles from a nearby homestead. Removing them would create too much damage as they are super close to the edge of the unstable canyon.
Jana Irving I wonder if the guy who owned the property had a vehicle hording problem because there are a lot of cars for one property.
Jana Irving There are very few views of the canyon along much of the trail. The best views are near the parking areas.
Jana Irving Absolutely stunning.
Jana Irving I love the color contrast of the color of the soil and the vegetation.
Jana Irving Looks like a hoodoo. It isn’t. There’s also a tree on the top of that thing.
Jana Irving The park is small, but its worth a visit.
Jana Irving Love it.
Jana Irving Simply gorgeous.
Providence Canyon State Park is a bit in the middle of nowhere. I marked it as a place to visit when I moved to Savannah. However, it was a pretty far drive. I ended up with some time off and figured it would be a part of a three day trip. It was.
Tune in for my next update where I end up in Southern Portugal.
