Welcome to Portland

Explorations of the biggest city in Maine.

I couldn’t live in Maine for a whole summer and not make the journey down to see the biggest city in the state, Portland. A third of the population of Maine lives in Portland’s metro area alone. The first settlement in this area was all the way in 1623, but the city itself was not formed until 1786. Portland was once the capital of Maine, for 12 whole years before it was moved to Augusta.

Downtown Portland was once economically depressed, especially after malls were built in the suburbs and the shipping industry took a downturn. Today, the Old Seaport is a mecca for tourists and trendy businesses and the downtown doesn’t look too shabby either.

A visit to Portland would not be complete without visiting its famous lighthouse, the Portland Head Light. The lighthouse is located a bit outside of Portland on Cape Elizabeth at Fort Williams Park (which is also a great place to explore). This is the oldest lighthouse in Maine and was ordered to be built by George Washington himself. Construction started in 1787 and finished up in 1791.

Made it to downtown Portland. It is an interesting mix of modern and older architecture. They even have a couple of skyscrapers.

I have no idea why, but I really like this building.

A downtown wouldn’t be complete without a memorial of some sorts.

The Old Seaport has many 19th century buildings like these.

A lobster with a Guinness, what else would he drink?

The downtown of Portland is not too shabby.

Portland’s City Hall. Got to love the random air conditioner and particle board in the window in the middle. Very classy.

The Unitarian First Parish. I love the steeple.

Just outside downtown Portland is the famous Victoria Mansion, which you can tour. Unfortunately, I was time and funds limited so I didn’t go inside.

I wish I had much more time to explore Portland. The city has a bunch of art and history museums, along with Victoria Mansion. You could spend a couple days here just to see it all. If you only have a couple of hours like I did, just wandering around is always a great idea.

Check out my next update where I say goodbye to Acadia!
