Explorations of a village in the north of Luxembourg famous for its stunning castle.
Vianden is a small village nestled in a steep valley along a river. The northern part of Luxembourg is very hilly and mountainous. Most settlements hug a river at the bottom of a valley. The steep hills that surround these towns would have offered much protection, but Vianden went even further, Vianden Castle.
I traveled to Vianden from Luxembourg City. It was surprisingly easy, even with the train/bus transfers. Another bonus, all public transport is free in Luxembourg.
Jana Irving Stepped off the bus, immediately found the castle.
Jana Irving Walk 20 minutes in the opposite direction, you’ll end up in Germany. You just need to follow the river.
Jana Irving There is a very lovely walkway along the River Our.
Jana Irving Heading towards Germany now. I took the first two pictures from that bridge.
Jana Irving Very cute.
Jana Irving Small town but very, very cute.
Jana Irving Oh, look! There’s the castle. Heading towards it now.
Jana Irving It’s all up hill.
Jana Irving The very cute Stadhous (city hall).
Jana Irving Very cute.
Jana Irving Still going up.
Jana Irving Very cute hotel.
Jana Irving I got distracted and followed this path.
Jana Irving Found the old city walls.
Jana Irving Can’t be a picture taken in Europe with out at least one crane in it.
Jana Irving The Beffroi, a tower on the terrace below the castle.
Jana Irving More old city walls.
Jana Irving The bus into Vianden has a stop with a wonderful view of Vianden Castle. It would have made more sense to have started here. I ended up walking down hill in town, took a bus one stop uphill, to get this view. I did walk down though.
Jana Irving Now for a zoomed in view of the castle.
Jana Irving Vianden from above.
Jana Irving Time to head into the castle.
Jana Irving This picture would not have been possible if I didn’t have a wide-angle lens.
Jana Irving Very impressive.
Jana Irving The first room you see and also the last and somewhere in the middle. Thankfully, the tour route was very easy to follow.
Jana Irving I love this arch. It leads to a covered veranda.
Jana Irving Outside on the porch, you can see some changes that happened during the life of the castle. It was originally built in the medieval period, but has had many changes since, plus a reconstruction.
Jana Irving The chapel is two storied. It’s kind of weird.
Jana Irving The view from the lower chapel.
Jana Irving Renaissance era dining room.
Jana Irving Fancy bed.
Jana Irving Found one of the kitchens.
Jana Irving The grand hall, in a grand castle.
Vianden is one of Luxembourg’s biggest attractions. I can see why, the castle is fantastic and the town is cute. You don’t even need a car to visit.
