Explorations of a village in the north of Luxembourg famous for its stunning castle.
Vianden is a small village nestled in a steep valley along a river. The northern part of Luxembourg is very hilly and mountainous. Most settlements hug a river at the bottom of a valley. The steep hills that surround these towns would have offered much protection, but Vianden went even further, Vianden Castle.
I traveled to Vianden from Luxembourg City. It was surprisingly easy, even with the train/bus transfers. Another bonus, all public transport is free in Luxembourg.
Wandering Jana Stepped off the bus, immediately found the castle.
Wandering Jana Walk 20 minutes in the opposite direction, you’ll end up in Germany. You just need to follow the river.
Wandering Jana There is a very lovely walkway along the River Our.
Wandering Jana Heading towards Germany now. I took the first two pictures from that bridge.
Wandering Jana Very cute.
Wandering Jana Small town but very, very cute.
Wandering Jana Oh, look! There’s the castle. Heading towards it now.
Wandering Jana It’s all up hill.
Wandering Jana The very cute Stadhous (city hall).
Wandering Jana Very cute.
Wandering Jana Still going up.
Wandering Jana Very cute hotel.
Wandering Jana I got distracted and followed this path.
Wandering Jana Found the old city walls.
Wandering Jana Can’t be a picture taken in Europe with out at least one crane in it.
Wandering Jana The Beffroi, a tower on the terrace below the castle.
Wandering Jana More old city walls.
Wandering Jana The bus into Vianden has a stop with a wonderful view of Vianden Castle. It would have made more sense to have started here. I ended up walking down hill in town, took a bus one stop uphill, to get this view. I did walk down though.
Wandering Jana Now for a zoomed in view of the castle.
Wandering Jana Vianden from above.
Wandering Jana Time to head into the castle.
Wandering Jana This picture would not have been possible if I didn’t have a wide-angle lens.
Wandering Jana Very impressive.
Wandering Jana The first room you see and also the last and somewhere in the middle. Thankfully, the tour route was very easy to follow.
Wandering Jana I love this arch. It leads to a covered veranda.
Wandering Jana Outside on the porch, you can see some changes that happened during the life of the castle. It was originally built in the medieval period, but has had many changes since, plus a reconstruction.
Wandering Jana The chapel is two storied. It’s kind of weird.
Wandering Jana The view from the lower chapel.
Wandering Jana Renaissance era dining room.
Wandering Jana Fancy bed.
Wandering Jana Found one of the kitchens.
Wandering Jana The grand hall, in a grand castle.
Vianden is one of Luxembourg’s biggest attractions. I can see why, the castle is fantastic and the town is cute. You don’t even need a car to visit.
