Around Great Britain in 30 Days: Day 23, Hellfire Pass and a Patron Saint

From Snowdonia National Park to Saint Davids, explore Western Wales.

Wales is a beautiful country, with rolling hills, ruined monasteries, and coastal views. Day 23’s route brought me through the beautiful Snowdonia National Park for a wonderful scenic drive, followed by St. David’s Cathedral and final stop in Pembroke for the night. Day 23 was a wonderful day of exploration.

Rolling hills, farms and sheep. Such a lovely countryside Wales has.

The fog was also rolling through. It stuck to the valleys as I headed further up into the mountains. It was super cool.

Bad picture through a dirty windshield but road tunnel!!! Yes, this was a single lane two-way road.

I absolutely loved this area. I have to make it back again someday.

This whole area was just fantastic.

The view from Hellfire Pass.

The road was only slightly terrifying. Luckily, I was the only one on it because I had to ride my brake the entire way down.

Extremely steep to say the least.

St. David’s Cathedral in the distance.

The inside of the church has been restored multiple times, but its main architecture dates to the Norman period, 11-12th centuries.

Just a random bishop burial in the main nave.

Cool side corridor. I love the wooden ceilings in this church. Most are modern.

A little chapel behind the main altar.

Tomb of Lady Maidstone. I don’t know who she is, but I love her tomb.

The Lady Chapel in the back of the church.

The quire of the church (choir area) is pretty cool.

So is the ceiling of the central tower.

The tomb of Saint David is behind the altar.

The ruins of the Bishop’s Palace.

This would have been once fancy palace. Tons of windows.

A great hall or a church? I don’t know.

Stop 3: Pembroke

Last stop of the day was at Pembroke, a small town near the western shores of Wales. The town has a bunch of historic buildings and a castle. I got there late but I had some time before it got too dark to wander a bit and get something to eat.

Pembroke Castle, another well preserved Welsh castle. So many awesome castles here!

It’s a cute little town with brightly painted buildings through the town center.

This one is a bit interesting.

Day 23 was full of scenic views and historic buildings. I clearly didn’t have enough time scheduled for Wales. There is just so much to see and do! Castles, churches, beautiful scenery and adorable towns abound!

Check out Day 24 where I explore the Welsh capitol of Cardiff!
