Portugal: Wandering Óbidos

Explorations of a colorful medieval town with cobblestone streets.

Óbidos is located about an hour’s drive north of central Lisbon, Portugal. It’s a small town, known for its adorableness. Perched on a ridge rising above the countryside, Óbidos is a town of bright colors, cobblestone streets, and overall cuteness.

The views start strong in the town’s free parking lot.

Porta da Vila, the grandest city gate, probably built in the 14th century.

They even put a oratory up in the gate. I love those azulejos.

Like I said, adorable. Many buildings in this small medieval city are accented with very bold colors. They stand out even more once the sun comes up.

This town is a bit extra.

Almost empty streets when I arrived even though it was in the afternoon. Eventually more people will start flooding in. I’m pretty sure there was at least a couple large tour groups roaming around by that point.

Sooooooo cute.

Looking back at the Porta da Vila.

I really love all the bold colors.

Who couldn’t love a cobblestone street? Well, my ankles, but at least they are cute.

This is fantastic.

I probably walked every street in the old city.

Tooooo cute!

Santa Maria de Óbidos. I checked back to see if it was open before I left the area. I was in luck.

Those azulejos are stunning.

Gorgeous ceilings as well.

A closer look at those tiles.

Very cute.

It’s still cute right outside the city walls.

This town is the best.

Back in the city walls, heading to the castle.

Old church, turned bookstore, at the entrance to the castle.

The Castle of Óbidos has a pretty imposing keep.

The castle grounds are free to enter. The grounds were set up for a winter carnival. However, you could still climb all over the walls.

Too much cuteness.

This cute building shares the same plaza of the church above, Santa Maria de Óbidos.

Looking down the main drag, which has a lot of shops.

This is the best thing ever.

On the backside of the Porta da Vila, you can access the city walls.

Looking inside of the Porta da Vila.

The sun decided to make an appearance for a bit. The gray clouds are from burning fallen trees and other vegetation. Storm Kirsten rolled through a couple of days before, so there were a lot of bonfires around the countryside.

About at this point on the walls, my phone started going crazy. The storm knocked out much of the cell service and it was just then restored to the Óbidos area.

Before heading out, I left the old town and headed to the Santuário do Senhor da Pedra on the outskirts of town.

Not bad, not bad at all.

A very pastel color scheme. It actually reminds me of Northern European Baroque. They love pastels.

Óbidos is fairly close to Lisbon by car and tour bus. I found it a lovely place to spend the afternoon after a stormy morning. Lots of cute streets and cute shops to wander through.

Tune in for my next update where I explore the Palace of Mafra!
